My dad's latest argument when he does something totally hypocritical is that I am too much like my mother.
...I'm sorry?
Obviously my dad never wanted to be a logical and rational thinker, but it's okay, I didn't pick it up from him.

Vegetarianism
I am a self-proclaimed naturefreak, yet I eat meat. People ask me why sometimes. I personally see few reasons to "go veggie".
"meat is bad for you"...Humans are built to eat and process meat, so there is no reason to say that meat is bad for you in a normal life. People shouldn't be eating tons of fat if they aren't running around in the cold all the time, nor should you be eating pure protein all the time. It's really not that hard to find a balance in there somewhere, people!
"animals feel pain"...so we should convince dogs, cats, sharks, and chimps not to eat meat, either? Things die, things are eaten. Living things must feed other living things. That's just how it works. Pain isn't going to suddenly disappear from the world.
"the meat we eat had/has a soul"...well, so much for that. I just ate it. sorry, mate.
"today's meat comes from gigantic icky factories that are terrible and ack"...this is so true, which is the only good reason I can imagine someone might come up with. Lots of people do not have or are not aware of places that sell local meats that were taken care of on the farm and shipped a few miles into town. Lucky for me I live near a place that sells good local meat that wasn't totally petrified when it died and didn't go through a ton of either overly-chemicaled or under-sanitized machinery before arriving medium-rare to my plate.
I hope that someday Temple Grandin will convert all meat-processing places so that vegetarians, excluding those who have actual dietary restrictions or religious duties (they'll figure it out sooner or later) can go back to being the happy omnivores humans are.

parting is such something-or-other-whatever
three months ago 26 chicks arrived at my house in a foot2 cardboard box. we butchered all of the cornish crosses, as well as a domonique that turned out to be a rooster. we sold three to one of my mom's customers, and four this morning to a woman who owns a winery. All of those hens will have excellent homes, but... I already miss them. the backyard is so quiet with just six chickens left; Shorty, Molly, Moon, Rebel, and Violet are the young ones, and our old Gatekeeper. they're quiet and depressed and confused, too. I think they'll get used to it, get over it, but it's still hard. At least I know where the other chickens went. The chicks at the winery will have acres to explore and a safe coop to sleep in at night. the three that went to one of my mom's customers will have a brand new coop all to themselves. So I'm not worried about them, i just miss them.
plus, school starts in a week.

see last line
On Chinese restaurant take-out boxes there are two holes you could put the flap in to close the box. I think they put the extra one there to reassure people that you have a choice.
that is the treehugger's obscure, pointless, and potentially incorrect think o' the day.
